Organic Remedies in Maharashtra for Menstrual Cramps
Maharashtra’s tribal women use several locally sourced herbs to alleviate menstrual discomfort. These remedies reflect both the natural bounty of the land and the deep understanding of the body’s needs during menstruation.
1. Ajwain (Carom Seeds):
Ajwain, or carom seeds, are known for their ability to ease digestion and reduce pain. In Maharashtra, it is widely believed that ajwain has a strong carminative effect, which can relieve bloating and improve blood circulation during menstruation.
How to Use: Ajwain can be consumed by mixing a teaspoon of the seeds with warm water. Alternatively, it can be roasted and sprinkled over food.
2. Fenugreek Seeds (Methi):
Fenugreek seeds are rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly iron and magnesium, which are crucial for muscle relaxation and reducing cramps. Fenugreek also has anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce the severity of menstrual pain.
How to Use: Fenugreek seeds are typically soaked overnight and consumed the next morning, or they can be ground into a powder and mixed with warm water to form a paste, which is applied to the abdomen.
3. Basil (Tulsi):
Known for its sacred status in many parts of India, basil is highly valued for its medicinal properties. Tulsi is particularly effective in balancing hormones, easing muscle spasms, and reducing the emotional toll of menstruation, such as mood swings or irritability.
How to Use: Tulsi leaves are either chewed directly or brewed into a soothing herbal tea. Some women also make a paste of the leaves and apply it topically for pain relief.
